Freelance Life At Bohemiacademia, Week 37

It’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve written a round-up; sorry about that. Sometimes things just get too busy and I have to focus on doing the actual work, rather than writing about it. 😉

If you’re new here: Hi, I’m Scar, Founder & CEO here at Bohemiacademia. I do a whole bunch of things, including working from our Kensington office a couple of days a week.

Freelance Life At Bohemiacademia, Week 34

It’s been a busy few weeks here at Bohemiacademia, with a lot of writing going on. It looks like one of our clients is about to shift into a slightly different area of business, which will give us a different slant to work on, which is never a bad thing. But it will mean moving things around a bit, and that’s never the easiest time to oversee, so I for one am having a fairly stress-packed fortnight. Happily I spent the weekend hiding away from the world not looking at the internet, and hanging out with my cat instead. It was bliss.

But now it’s Monday, and I’m back in the office and back to the real world.

Freelance Life At Bohemiacademia, Week 33

I am suffering a bit this morning, because I went out twice at the weekend to celebrate finishing the first draft of my novel, and that is more than my anti-social little heart can take. I also had too much wine, which might be contributing to my overall grumpiness. Nonetheless I am in the office, and unusually I am planning to spend every day here this week like a Normal Person™ because a couple of clients need some extra things in August.

Freelance Life At Bohemiacademia, Week 31

Mercifully, it is a bit cooler here this week. I am no longer suffocating in the London office (and the cat is back home, where she belongs), but I am still buried under piles of work. I’m thinking about hiring an intern to help out with a variety of smaller tasks, so if you’re interested or you know someone who might be, let me know.

Freelance Life At Bohemiacademia, Week 30

It’s due to hit 37 or 39°C this week in London, depending on which weather forecasting app you’re looking at. My brain tends to melt to sludge as soon as it goes over 30, which it already has today. It’s 33°C and I’m spending the day in the office, because it has air conditioning, and because my house has a big south-facing bay window, which practically turns it into a greenhouse in the summer months.

Freelance Life At Bohemiacademia, Week 29

It’s 8.30pm and I’m still in the office. I’ve been here for about twelve hours, which actually isn’t that bad for a Monday. I tend to work two mammoth days in the office each week, so that on the other days I can split my time more evenly among other things. This week I’m also planning to go on holiday – I’ll be offline from Thursday-Sunday – so I have a bunch of things to get done before I can leave.

Freelance Life At Bohemiacademia, Week 27

The year is flying by and getting hotter as it goes, at least here in London. We’ve seen record temperatures this week: 34 degrees on Saturday in West London, where I live. Luckily I managed to escape for the day and get into a nice cold sea down in Brighton, although about half the population of London had evidently had the same idea, so I spent a significant portion of my day baking on the M25 and begging my car not to break down. Today I’m back in the (mercifully air-conditioned) office.

What we’ve been up to this week

Hello everyone! How are you? I’d assumed no one was really reading these weekly missives, but we’ve had a couple of enquiries over the past few days coming through the site so perhaps people do look at them after all.

Today in London the sky looks like this:

This seems to be making some people assume it’s the apocalypse, but of course freelancers deal with all sorts of weird stuff on a daily basis so a little apocalypse won’t stop us working.

It’s been a busy week here at Bohemiacademia – or perhaps I should say ‘everywhere at Bohemiacademia’, since we don’t have a single office.

I’m writing this from my home office, which is in my kitchen, smushed up against the fridge-freezer. On the desk next to the to-do pile is a speaker, which is currently pumping out a cheesy 90s playlist. DON’T JUDGE ME IT’S KEEPING ME GOING. There’s also a bunch of flowers and a card with a pink flamingo wearing sunglasses. All of these things are making me smile as I go about my day.

Other freelancers will be working from their kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, local coffee shops, libraries, coworking spaces… all over the place. In a few weeks’ time we’ll be starting an interview series in which freelancers will be giving you a glimpse into their lives, so you should be able to see where people work from and how they structure their time.

In the meantime, however, we’ve been working on a number of projects.

Our French translation team have been very busy this week. One client needed a full website translation; one needed a full website proofreading service; a third needed some documents translated with a very quick turnaround time; and a fourth needed a bit of editing. The projects have all been completed now, and are being compiled and sent back to the client today.

Carlie has been busy interviewing people for a client’s podcast; this week she’s focusing on health insurance and life in the Netherlands. Once she’s done, our transcription team will take over and type up the interviews for the hearing impaired.

Our social media team have been hard at work as always: Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google Plus, and LinkedIn are the accounts we’re currently managing for our clients.

Of course, writing makes up a huge chunk of our work too; this week Garreth, Debbie, Nichola, Steve and Bella have been sending over features to be proofread by Johanna before being posted on our clients’ websites.

Scar has been interviewing people about digital forensics, pitching projects to potential clients, and having calls with current clients about plans for the next few months.
