Freelance Life At Bohemiacademia, Week 34

It’s been a busy few weeks here at Bohemiacademia, with a lot of writing going on. It looks like one of our clients is about to shift into a slightly different area of business, which will give us a different slant to work on, which is never a bad thing. But it will mean moving things around a bit, and that’s never the easiest time to oversee, so I for one am having a fairly stress-packed fortnight. Happily I spent the weekend hiding away from the world not looking at the internet, and hanging out with my cat instead. It was bliss.

But now it’s Monday, and I’m back in the office and back to the real world.

Freelance Life At Bohemiacademia, Week 33

I am suffering a bit this morning, because I went out twice at the weekend to celebrate finishing the first draft of my novel, and that is more than my anti-social little heart can take. I also had too much wine, which might be contributing to my overall grumpiness. Nonetheless I am in the office, and unusually I am planning to spend every day here this week like a Normal Person™ because a couple of clients need some extra things in August.

Freelance Life At Bohemiacademia, Week 31

Mercifully, it is a bit cooler here this week. I am no longer suffocating in the London office (and the cat is back home, where she belongs), but I am still buried under piles of work. I’m thinking about hiring an intern to help out with a variety of smaller tasks, so if you’re interested or you know someone who might be, let me know.

Freelance Life At Bohemiacademia, Week 29

It’s 8.30pm and I’m still in the office. I’ve been here for about twelve hours, which actually isn’t that bad for a Monday. I tend to work two mammoth days in the office each week, so that on the other days I can split my time more evenly among other things. This week I’m also planning to go on holiday – I’ll be offline from Thursday-Sunday – so I have a bunch of things to get done before I can leave.

Freelance Life At Bohemiacademia, Week 27

The year is flying by and getting hotter as it goes, at least here in London. We’ve seen record temperatures this week: 34 degrees on Saturday in West London, where I live. Luckily I managed to escape for the day and get into a nice cold sea down in Brighton, although about half the population of London had evidently had the same idea, so I spent a significant portion of my day baking on the M25 and begging my car not to break down. Today I’m back in the (mercifully air-conditioned) office.

Where Has Winter Gone?

I am one of those strange people who love winter. When the days get shorter, darker and colder I rejoice. While everyone else hibernates, I go for long walks in the cold. And in the summer, when other people throw open their windows and dust off their bikini bottoms, I yank the curtains closed and want to stay in bed.

This year it’s incredibly mild for the middle of February, and I feel like I’m being cheated out of winter. This, coupled with the extra-long, extra-hot summer we had, is making me a bit grumpy.

And then I had to spend an hour on the phone to HMRC this morning, which will never ungrump anyone. So on the whole, it’s been a grumpy week. But there are nice things happening too.  Read More
